When You Come to Town

Some restaurants become part of your life story.

This painting was inspired by countless dinners at Din Tai Fung — the kind of place that instantly became tradition for my family. Every time someone visits us from out of town, this is where we take them. It’s comfort, celebration, routine, and nostalgia all at once.

Painted from an overhead perspective, this piece captures the beautiful chaos of the table mid-meal — soup dumplings steaming in bamboo baskets, noodles half-finished, dipping sauces mixed, glasses scattered around the table, chopsticks abandoned mid-conversation. I wanted it to feel alive and memory-filled, like the visual equivalent of hearing everyone talk over each other.

The thick oil brushstrokes and saturated blues, lavenders, creams, and golden yellows give the painting a dreamy warmth while still feeling energetic and modern. It’s less about perfectly painting food and more about preserving the feeling of being there with people you love.

This piece is for anyone whose favorite memories revolve around delicious food, good conversation, and the people sitting across the table.
