Original Painting by Ginette Gaskin
The Matchbox
The Matchbox
Oil on Canvas
8x8x1.5 oil on canvas
There’s so many ways to speculate the symbolism behind a match. A strike, a spark igniting, blowing out a flame. In this painting, two matches lay burnt, maybe the third time is the charm?
I was drawn to this composition because of its simplicity — bold red against deep green (my forever favorite), strong graphic shapes, and thick, expressive brushstrokes that make even the smallest object feel alive. The paint is layered and tactile, giving the matchbox weight and presence.
It pairs beautifully with collectors who love bold color, graphic compositions, and art that feels both nostalgic and symbolic.
Sometimes the simplest subjects carry the strongest meaning.
